The Battle of Wilmington
Written by Cameron "Spike" Harlow
“ It appears that we’ve hit nearly all their cannon with the last bombardment” reported Admiral Porter. Leading the Union’s naval forces against this last strategic port at Wilmington had been feather in his cap he had waited for the entire war. Now it was up to Generals Ames and Martin to take the fort for their own.
“Here,” said Ames as he handed a list to Martin. “Have these supplies and troops ready by morning.”
Shocked, Martin replied, “So many?! What if the Rebel’s…..”
“ We don’t leave ‘till Fisher is ours!” He took a moment to let the venom from his words fade away and lit his pipe.” General Martin, understand that Wilmington and Fort Fisher represent Lee’s lifeline and the last haven for blockade runners.
We take it and we win the war.”
“Lamb!!” yelled General Whitting to the officer across the compound. He was holding two reports in his hands. One updating the efforts of the troops from the north that were supposed to come reinforce them and another from Braxton Bragg.
“Looks like you have done too good a job on this place”, he said with a grin. Colonel Lamb had worked hard on Fort Fisher, reinforcing it, strengthening walls and gates and it looked like his work had not gone unnoticed. “Bragg is confident, maybe too confident, that this place can’t be taken. That means no new troops”.
“ Even after the shelling we took last night? We’ve nearly lost all our cannon. What about the reinforcements already on the way?”
Lifting his left hand and waving the reports he added “ Cut off. Not sure if they will make it at all.”
“How long do ya’ think we can hold out? The Union isn’t going to stop with a bombardment a land assault is coming.” Lamb looked off in the distance towards the Union Fleet deep in thought verging on fear. He had done a great job but he wasn’t sure it his fort could take more of this fight.
“ Well,” Whitting began, seeming himself to be in heavy contemplation, “ Lee said ‘hold it’ so hold it we will. Get the men armed and ready. Best if we are prepared for anything and I do mean anything.”
For a long moment, a moment not long enough and yet it seemed like an eternity, both officers stared at Fort Fisher. Memorizing it. Praying that in he morning nothing will have changed.
