BeBop Productions and Black River Sportz Bring you:
Battle of the Bulge Siege of Bastogne written by “Spike” Harlow It was cold. Very cold. Food, water, medical supplies and personnel were at an all time low. “ We’ve hit rock bottom on the ammunition, sir” reported Lt. Colonel Harry Kinnard. “ What’s worse , we have confirmation that they can hit us from all sides” . He tugged on his collar , wished he had warmer gloves and took a seat across from General Anthony McAuliffe. He didn’t seem to move. Just stared at a report he’d opened just before Lt. Col. Kinnard. came in. It wasn’t a good report either. More delays, more casualties, and less time. “ Have the men hold their fire”, he grumbled. Lt. Col. Kinnard jerked alert. “ What? Till we see the whites of their eyes?!” “ No!” snapped back General McAuliffe,” ‘till they are all bunched up! More bang for the bullet”. Both shared a rye grin but still knowing the deadly truth of the order. The slam of the door was followed by the intense rush of cold that proceeded a young corporal. Practically stumbling over his own feet, he came to an abrupt stop between Lt. Col. Kinnard and General McAuliffe. “ Sir! They sent a message, sir! “ He held out a shaking hand in which was a crumpled message from the German General. “To the U.S.A. Commander of the encircled town of Bastogne. The fortune of war is changing. This time the U.S.A. forces in and near Bastogne have been encircled by strong German armored units. More German armored units have crossed the river Our near Ortheuville, have taken Marche and reached St. Hubert by passing through Hompre-Sibret-Tillet. Libramont is in German hands. There is only one possibility to save the encircled U.S.A. troops from total annihilation: that is the honorable surrender of the encircled town. In order to think it over a term of two hours will be granted beginning with the presentation of this note. If this proposal should be rejected one German Artillery Corps and six heavy A. A. Battalions are ready to annihilate the U.S.A. troops in and near Bastogne. The order for firing will be given immediately after this two hours' term. All the serious civilian losses caused by this artillery fire would not correspond with the well known American humanity. The German Commander.” “What do we say sir”, the corporal asked. General McAuliffe slumped back into his chair and uttered a single word…………. It was cold. And these damnable American’s would not let him have his victory. Couldn’t he see his efforts were pointless? “ Sir, a response” . The lieutenant handed General Hasso von Manteuffel an envelope. It was several minutes but he finally asked…… “ Vat is dis ‘ nuts’ meaning ?”
